Building Plymouth - March 2024
As part of National Careers Week activities, a group of Year 9 students took part in the Building Plymouth Open Sites event and visited the new construction project at Sherford.
At the start of the visit, students listened to a Construction Careers presentation by Morven Maclean from Building Plymouth and staff from Taylor Wimpy gave students an insight into the scale of the Sherford project, emphasising the importance of designing a green infrastructure and legacy landscaping, together with local housing and community facilities.
Students took part in a timed building challenge competition, and then went for a tour of an ‘Uncovered House’ on the site, which had an ingenious ‘plasterboard letterbox’ running through it.
A member of the YGS landscaping team was on hand to provide a tour of some of the legacy landscaping projects at Sherford, including dry stone walls, the Bat Bridge and the 10 meter high Green Wall, designed to encourage biodiversity.
