It was a case of Physics Monday recently as the College welcomed two organisations to speak with some of their students on the subject of Engineering.

We were delighted to welcome AECOM to deliver an Engineering Workshop to members of our Girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) group, whilst our Physics Department welcomed Babcock to discuss Nuclear Physics.

Don’t need a Degree in Nuclear Physics (there’s an apprenticeship for that)

As well as running through the topic of Nuclear Physics, the Babcock presentation focussed on…

How to Measure Radiation

How different elements change and what they will change into

Half Lives

How to protect yourself and others from Radiation

Sixth Form students were also introduced to some of the Careers Opportunities at Babcock (they have enough work in the workbooks for the next 100 years) as well as a special apprenticeship with a very attractive £30,000 salary.

Girls prove they have the Engineering Skills

Meanwhile, over in a Design and Technology classroom, members of the Girls in STEM Team were being given an insight into the work of AECOM, by one of their Maritime Engineers and Senior Environmental Engineer.

The session mainly focussed on their Offshore Windfarms activities, however, they also talked about the career opportunities available within the organisation – they have 28 offices, and a variety of jobs roles – not all of them relating to boats.

The girls were also invited to take part in a practical windfarm challenge, based on constructing small scale models of real world wind turbines.

A special congratulations to...

Lucy Barham

Georgia Biscombe

Lerryn Morcumbe

...who were set the challenge of constructing a Barge Windmill, and at the time, of all the schools AECOM has visited, were the only group to have successfully completed this task.

The students had a great morning with one anonymously writing afterwards…

“Really fun, kind staff, and a good way to learn about other career paths in things such as engineering”

Thank you to AECOM and Babcock, who both also made an appearance at our Careers Fair the following month, and we hope to work with them in future to bring more insightful opportunities to our students!
