Students took part in a recent local art project with both creativity and the community at its heart.
As part of their Green Maker Initiative, the College was delighted to team up with local Arts organisation Make South West.
Students participated in some arts based workshops presented by some of Make South West’s ‘pledged Green Makers’ who gave them an insight into their sustainably based practice and they had the opportunity to work on some very creative projects, including the textile pieces pictured.
Their work was later displayed as part of an exhibition at Make South West’s Gallery in Bovey Tracey, Teignbridge.
The organisation’s ‘Green Maker Initiative’ is a project designed to help support artists and creative practitioners on the journey to become more sustainable in their creative practices.
"It is just one bottle” said 8 billion people
As part of a printmaking workshop, students had the opportunity to meet and make work under the supervision of local printmaker Karen Bowskill, an artist who regularly volunteers with helping to clean her local beach, and uses reclaimed materials to create some very imaginative work, including purses, cushions and handbags.
There was also an opportunity to consider the environment and sustainability in a more comprehensive context.
According to her website, Karen’s aim is to ‘challenge our perception of waste by transforming it into beautiful products.’
‘There is more plastic than fish in the sea'
Speaking about the day, students said:
“I really enjoyed the art that we did on Tuesday. I loved doing the printing and how all of it came from the beach. I learnt how to print in large quantities. I think this made me think a bit more about the environmental issues especially the quote "it is just one bottle,” said 8 billion people. " Martha, Year 8 |

"I enjoyed doing the art day as I had a great day and loved learning Karen's style of art. I learnt how to print with plastic that you can collect on the beach daily and create a large piece of artwork for the school, which made me think more about the quote 'there is more plastic than fish in the sea' and I thought more about the environmental issues and impact on animals. But most importantly I had fun!" Scarlett, Year 8 |

"I found this work shop really helpful. It was amazing how Karen used all different pieces of plastic she had found on the beach and how she made all of her work." Fynn, Year 8 |
