Girls in Science Race to Success

Following the Ivybridge Community College Girls into Science Club building a car to race as part of the GreenPower Electric Vehicles Challenge, thirteen girls took part in the GreenPower South West heat at Predannack airfield in Cornwall on Wednesday, 15 June 2022.

There were seventeen cars racing on the day, many of whom have been doing this for close to ten years.  The girls had never raced before but were outstanding.  Their driving was precise and consistent, coming within a second of their times every lap, they avoided any major mishaps and drove with the confidence of drivers who have been doing this for years.  Their pit stops were the slickest on the day by far, with one in particular being a literal blink and you missed it change.  They were placed 2nd overall in their classification and even more impressively 5th overall in all cars, meaning they beat many of the custom builds with lighter frames and specialist pieces of equipment.  They also won the IET engineering award on the day for best built car.

It is important to note that the girls ran the whole day making all the tactical and race decisions with only consultation with adults who came to help out.

During the races they were completely on their own and performed brilliantly. Craig Jewel, teacher of Physics at the College, who has been championing this initiative said, “I am exceptionally proud of them and it was wonderful to see how confident and enthusiastic they all were.  There was one very near miss with another team’s car on a turn which made us all gasp but we scraped through with millimetres to spare!”
