Students get active at College’s Transition Enrichment Day
Year 6 students preparing to transition to Ivybridge Community College received a warm welcome when they attended a summer enrichment day, with a wide variety of different activities.
The 245 excited students spent a full day at the College, towards the end of their summer break, taking part in a diverse range of seven activities including circus skills, gymnastics, music, orienteering, problem solving, rugby, and team building. The new initiative was a timely occasion for the students, who were able to learn more about the College site, which can be a daunting prospect for newcomers, and it also gave them a preview of the College’s enrichment opportunities.
“After such a turbulent couple of years for these young students, it was great to be able to show them that Ivybridge Community College is friendly and welcoming,” said Helen Reddy, Director of Enrichment and Sports Academy. “This is the first time that we have run a day like this for our new Year 7 students, and the goal was to show them that, despite being such a large campus, the College is not so daunting. Enrichment plays a huge part in these students’ whole-College experience and we wanted to reassure them that their new environment is somewhere that they should look forward to attending.”
COVID-19 restrictions have meant that primary school pupils have not been able to visit the College over the last 18 months, so the College took the first opportunity it could to make the day possible.
The day included six different 30 minute sessions for the students, where they were split into their new Tutor Groups, so they were able to make new friends immediately and get to know those that they would be sharing their first year with.
Helen Reddy added, “The day was a tremendous success with lots of positive feedback, so we will certainly be running it again for future Year 7 students.”
