Early in March, the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) the College celebrated World Book Day in spectacular fashion.
This year, the LRC went above and beyond by transforming the library into the magical Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz.
The space was adorned with shimmering green streamers, a handmade paper-mâché hot air balloon, and, of course, the famous Yellow Brick Road.
Adding to the magic, librarians Mrs. Trafford and Mrs. Hull dressed up as Glinda the Good Witch and Dorothy, complete with her iconic red slippers.
The lead-up to World Book Day was packed with exciting competitions that engaged students across the College.
A highlight was the 500-Word Short Story Competition, open to all year groups.
This year’s theme was Adventure, and students rose to the challenge with incredible entries.
The winning piece was a stunning poem titled The Midnight Library by Year 7 student Alba Knight-Climent.
Another popular competition was Book in a Jar, where students creatively filled empty jars with objects representing their favourite books.
Among the impressive entries were jars inspired by War Horse, Little Women, and Black Beauty.
The winning creation was a beautiful recreation of a scene from The Secret Garden, complete with a magical floating key, crafted by Year 7 twins Elizabeth and Isabelle Bunney (pictured below).
In the Wooden Spoon Competition, students transformed wooden spoons into their favourite fictional characters.
The designs ranged from a variety of genres...

The winning entry was an imaginative rendition of the dragon-like Rayquaza, crafted by Wes Willcocks in Year 7 (pictured below).
Adding an extra element of fun, ten pairs of ruby slippers were hidden around the school.
Students who found them were entered into a special library raffle.
The overall raffle winner was Betsy Wakeham, Year 8, who took home the grand prize.
During breaktime, the library buzzed with excitement as students participated in various reading activities.
The festivities concluded with a prize-giving ceremony, attended by hundreds of students.
Reflecting on the success of the event, Mrs. Trafford shared, “It is such a pleasure to see so many students taking part in our celebrations. Literacy is a big part of what we do at the College, and it’s important to know that reading isn’t just about words on a page - it’s about sharing stories, exploring ideas, and experiencing the magic of books.”
World Book Day at the LRC was truly a memorable celebration of creativity, imagination, and, most importantly, a love of reading.
