Year 8 Football B Team through to English Schools’ Football Association Final
The Ivybridge Community College Year 8 Football Team has reached the final of the
English Schools’ Football Association (ESFA) Under 13 Playstation Schools’ Cup for B Teams. The final will be held in May at a professional stadium yet to be announced.
Ivybridge defeated Hurstmere School from Kent in a tense semi-final played at the College. Hurstmere were leading two - nil at half time, but Ivybridge responded with two early second half goals from Kyle Duffy and James Anderson which pulled the tie level. The visitors responded by quickly scoring twice more, seemingly putting the tie to bed. Ivybridge failed to yield despite having a goal ruled out and scored again through Kyle Duffy, before he completed his hat trick with one minute to play, levelling the tie at four all and forcing extra time. It was still four all at the end of the first half of extra time before a now dominant Ivybridge scored twice more through Kyle Duffy to win six - four.
The Year 8 Football Team Manager, Richard Knightley, said “The boys showed real character, never letting their heads drop and refusing to throw the towel in despite twice trailing by two goals. I am immensely proud of the spirit and togetherness they showed in adversity and it was their sheer determination and hard work that eventually pulled them through.”
