Diving into the medals

Four Ivybridge Community College students Zach Anderson, Year 7, Alfie Westerman, Year 8, Josh Freeman, Year 8 and Josh Gibbs, Year 9, were part of a successful Plymouth Diving Team that competed in the fifth international Ulla Klinger Cup in Aachen, Germany between 3 November to 5 November 2017.

The Life Centre based club returned home with six medals and thirteen top eight placings.

The event attracted top young divers from Germany, Russia, Italy, Ukraine, Spain, Switzerland, Finland, Croatia, Czech Republic, Holland and Britain.

Alfie Westerman and his diving partner claimed Gold in the Boys’ D/C three-metre Synchro event.  The Plymouth duo edged out Ukraine’s Vadyslav Klimko and Ilia Paraka by just 0.45 points in a thrilling competition.  In the same event, Josh Freeman and Zach Anderson came fourth.

Zach led the way for Plymouth in the individual events.  He gained medals in all of his disciplines, winning a Silver and two Bronzes.  His Silver came in the Boys’ D Platform, where he finished behind Ukraine’s Kirill Boliukh.

In the one metre and three metre springboard competitions, Zach came third behind Russia’s Sergei Trifonov and Boliukh.  The Under 13 Synchro three metre saw him placed fourth.

Alfie was fifth in the platform and one metre events and sixth in the three metre.

In the three metre competition, Plymouth actually had three divers in the top ten, with Josh Freeman finishing ninth. 

Josh Gibbs was part of a quartet that also took part in the three metre and platform events, finishing thirteenth in the latter. The Boys’ B one metre also saw Josh Gibbs finishing in the top twenty.
