Students recently took advantage of an invitation to an important appointment at a famous London Landmark.

Earlier this year, a group of eager historians took a trip to the Capital and visit the world-famous Palace of Westminster to meet with a key member of staff and pick up some extra political knowledge.

As part of Parliament’s Learn with the Lords initiative, students were given a tour of parts of the parliamentary estate (including the House of Commons and the House of Lords), as well as the opportunity to participate in a Question and Answer Session with a member of the House of Lords and learn about their role in the UK Parliament.

Speaking about their visit, Head of History and Politics Mr White said “We’ve been involved in having a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster, going into both Chambers, being able to see at ground level, what it’s like for MPs and Peers to be in Parliament.”

Humanities teacher Mr Bray added “[The students are] going to look at Politics probably in a different way having been here for a day.”

“We got to meet a Baroness…so our students got to engage with understanding the House of Lords and they got to ask their own questions as well.”

Mr White said that it was such a privilege for the students to ask a question that they came up with themselves.

Learn with the Lords is an initiative of the UK Parliament, offering activities aimed at students between the ages of 7 to 18, including school visits, interactive online sessions and video resources, covering a variety of Parliamentary topics.

Mr White also commented that the students benefitted from a real unique opportunity this day provided them, and they had already booked a return visit later this year.
